Kindergarten and 1st Grade Presentations:

Overview:

Mike knows how to entertain as well as inform K-1 kids. Each of Mike’s presentations is designed to delight as well as engage the children and the emphasis is on fun. A typical presentation to this age group lasts between 35 and 45 minutes. Although each presentation is unique, here’s the basic content of Mike’s presentation to K - 1 kids:

Introduction (3 - 5 minutes):

bullet Mike tells the kids a little about his family, pets, etc.
bullet Mike draws a map showing the kids where New Orleans (Mike’s hometown) is.
bullet Mike talks about what it’s like to be an author/illustrator.

Book Talk and Cartooning (25 - 35 minutes):

bullet Kids read aloud with Mike as he reads from some of his emergent reader books.
bullet Mike talks about the various media he uses to illustrate books.
bullet Kids watch as Mike creates a torn paper character.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw a sheep (there is a sheep in one of his books).
bullet Mike talks with kids about emotions and demonstrates how faces change with different feelings.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw emotions on faces.
bullet Mike talks about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw a dinosaur.
bullet Mike reads from his book, WEATHER WHYS and talks about the North and South poles.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw a penguin.

2nd and 3rd Grade Presentations

Overview:

Children in 2nd and 3rd Grades will enjoy the fun facts and the wordplay in Mike’s science and humor books, and they’ll love learning how to write and draw their own original cartoons. A typical presentation to this age group lasts approximately 45 minutes. Although each presentation is unique, here’s the basic content of Mike’s presentation:

Introduction (3 - 5 minutes):

bullet Mike tells the kids a little about his family, pets, etc.
bullet Mike draws a map showing the kids where New Orleans (Mike’s hometown) is.
bullet Mike talks about what it’s like to be an author/illustrator.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike "tricks" them into drawing a surprising creature.

Book Talk and Cartooning (35 - 40 minutes):

bullet Mike reads from his book, WEATHER WHYS and shares amazing weather facts.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw the earth getting hit by lightning.
bullet Mike reads from his book, STARRY SKIES and talks about the distances between planets.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw Saturn and a rocket ship.
bullet Mike shows examples of people and animals from his book, CARTOONING FOR KIDS
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw a variety of cartoon animals and people.
bullet Mike reads from his book, PETITE ROUGE - A Cajun Red Riding Hood.

4th and 5th Grade Presentations

Overview:

Mike’s presentations to this age group involve a bit more writing and independent creative thinking than the presentations for younger children. The cartoons they draw will also be more "advanced." A typical presentation to this age group lasts 45 minutes. Although each presentation is unique, the basic content includes the following:

Introduction (3 - 5 minutes):

bullet Mike talks about what it’s like to be an author/illustrator.
bullet Mike talks about creativity and how cartooning is based more on humor than art.
bullet Mike discusses Leonardo daVinci and shows kids the "math" (proportions) of drawing human faces.

Book Talk and Cartooning (40 minutes):

bullet Mike explains that most writing is "re-writing" and that cartoonists have to be good writers.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw things from unusual angles.
bullet Mike reads from his book, THE LITTLE GIANT BOOK OF TONGUE TWISTERS
bullet Mike challenges the students to recite tongue twisters from the book.
bullet Mike recites several limericks he’s written.
bullet Mike demonstrates how limericks and other wordplay can be used to create rebuses.
bullet Mike helps students create original rebuses.
bullet Mike talks about doing research for his non-fiction books.
bullet Mike reads from his book, BACKYARD BLOODSUCKERS & shares gross facts about bugs.
bullet Mike discusses typography. Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw "cool" lettering.
bullet Mike talks about Cajun culture & reads from his book, PETITE ROUGE - A Cajun Red Riding Hood.
bullet Kids draw along as Mike shows them how to draw an alligator in the Louisiana swamp.

 A note about Grades 6, 7 8 and above
